Water
Do you ever stop to think about what happens to all the waste water from kitchen sinks, shower drains and toilets that gets fed into the sewer system? Our dirty water simply disappears into a gigantic network of pipes, never to be seen again. Or does it?
Out of sight, but vital to the city of Utrecht, is the water purification plant of the Hoogheemraadschap De Stichtse Rijnlanden (overseeing polders, dikes and water management). Here, behind a high fence along the river Vecht, a group of opera-makers and 54 primary school students from the Rietendakschool gathered for an experiment.
Inspired by the sounds of water and the sewage treatment plant, they set to work investigating how you can turn the poetry of everyday life into something tangible. The result was a performance in the form of a musical ramble, from the gurgle of stinking sludge to the crisp crackle of fresh running water. Flushing will never be the same again.
Water was made possible by financial contributions from Actieplan Cultuurbereik, Utrecht City Council, Hoogheemraadschap de Stichtse Rijnlanden, LIRA Fonds, Ministry of OC&W and the Province of Utrecht.
Took place on:
