The Operaflat '09

Other than the 2007 Operaflat, a new format was used for the next edition in 2009. In that year, the texts were written by pupils of Gerrit Rietveld College. These young writers interviewed flat dwellers of the Faustdreef on food. Together with composers and classical singers studying at conservatories they created twenty-five mini-operas. Through the website of Yo! Opera, the makers -flat dwellers, pupils, composers and singers - were enabled to communicate. Although it seemed to be successful initially, this online creative environment did not do its work; joint sessions of composers, singers and young librettists in real life however were very fruitful. The twentyfive mini-operas could be seen and heard on 7 November 2009 and were - in spite of bad weather - attended by several hundreds of people, amongst whom some fifty foreign guests of the festival. This attention from abroad resulted, amongst other things, in an invitation of Guildhall School of Music in London to perform some of the flat operas there.
