Education in the Opera Lab
The Yo! Opera Lab is Yo! Opera Festival’s working laboratory, where we enjoy a long-term working relationship – a ‘creative partnership’ with two schools. These are the Openbare Basisschool De Rietendakschool (primary school) and Globe College (high school, formerly called Delta College).
Hands-on learning is the fundamental element of this programme. In addition to singing, the laboratory covers the other aspects of opera such as text, composition, décor and production.
In most cases we work together for a predetermined period of time, the end result of which is a professional opera project, for instance a performance or installation. This is often presented during the Yo! Opera Festival.
Together with the Rietendakschool we developed the multimedia music project De Zingende Stad (‘The Singing City’) for primary school groups 5, 6, 7 and 8. Previous projects at the Rietendakschool include Water and Kuil.
During the 2007 Yo! Opera Festival, Delta College students teamed up with the Glyndebourne Youth Opera Group in producing a ‘musical ramble’ about refugees entitled Wild Dreams.
In the spring of 2008 students in the A4B graduating class shared their hopes, thoughts and dreams for their future in the project Mijn toekomst (My Future). The result, a video installation with soundscape, could be seen at Utrecht City Hall throughout the month of June.
In 2009, Delta College students will write, design, rehearse and perform a production in co-operation with professional opera-makers. The subject of the production is the life of the student himself.
